Portfolio Manager Mentors Students for the CFA Institute Research Challenge

Aug 6, 2018

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition for university students that provides training and mentoring in financial analysis and ethics. CFA Society Minnesota hosts the local level challenge for the participating Upper Midwest universities.

For the research challenge, university teams are paired with an investment professional who serves as a mentor to guide them through the equity research process. Each team analyzes the same publicly traded company and writes a report with a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold. For the past seven years, Palisade’s portfolio manager Dennis Ott has served as a mentor to student teams at the University of Minnesota and Bethel University. This opportunity gives him a chance to volunteer with the local community and pass down his knowledge to future investment professionals. As a mentor, Dennis reviews the report process and provides critique and guidance on the team’s presentations. Over the years, his teams have been successful at advancing to different levels of the competition.
